Something Special for Teachers

Recently I was chatting with a fellow alumna of my high school. Though there were 10 years between us, we both had the same German teacher. We got to talking about what a great educator he was, and my friend commented, "Whenever I'm asked for my favorite teacher's name in one of those security questions, I always list him." Laughing, I confessed that I do the same.

It's been decades since either one of us were Mr. Temple's students, but he had a lasting impact on us both. I was even inspired by his teaching to major in English (which he also taught) and minor in German in college. You could say the course of my entire professional life was profoundly influenced by this one man. I'm not the only person who can say the same. Prominent individuals from Maya Angelou to John McCain to Bill Clinton have credited their own success to special teachers.

Educators and educational support staff are important people. Perhaps next to parents, they play the most critical role in shaping the development of youth. It is a challenging and too-often thankless calling. It's fitting, therefore, that the first week of May is designated Teacher Appreciation Week. It's the perfect opportunity to let these VIPs know how much they matter.

  • Trivia Tidbit: The tradition of giving teacher an apple is thought to date from when communities provided room and board as part of the teacher's compensation. An apple was a tasty, easily portable contribution even a small student could proudly present.

Happily for teachers, these days we have a lot more options for small tokens of appreciation. In fact, Tastefully Simple has put together a selection of simple, delicious items sure to bring a smile to any teacher or support staff member. Even better, each product has a printable gift tag with a fun slogan or heartfelt sentiment to make the gift even more special. Check them out »

If you are the traditional sort, try a twist on the old apple idea with a box of Nana's Apple Cake Mix (include a couple of apples if you want).

Likewise, a package of Cinnamon Muffin Melts Mix communicates that there's "muffin better than a good teacher!"
