    How to Make Your Patriotic Whoopie Pies

    Step 1:
    Preheat your oven to 350°F. Combine Absolutely Almond Pound Cake Mix™, 1 egg, ½ cup (1 stick) melted butter and ¼ cup water.

    Step 2: Color Divide the batter equally between two medium bowls. Add a few drops of red gel food coloring to one bowl, stirring until the batter until it reaches your preferred shade of red.

    Add a few drops of blue gel food coloring to the other batter, stirring until it reaches your desired shade of blue.

    Step 3: Roll the red dough into 1-1½ -inch balls and place ‘em on a greased baking sheet. (The cookies will spread a little bit, so don’t place them too close together!) Bake 10-12 minutes; cool. Repeat with blue dough; bake 10-12 minutes and let cool completely.

  8. Step 4: Fill
    Spread the bottom of each red cookie with a spoonful of canned, whipped cream cheese frosting. Press a second blue cookie on top of filling to create a sandwich. That’s it!

Tips & Hints

  • For the brightest and truest colors, use gel food coloring instead of liquid for your whoopie pies. I used super-concentrated food coloring paste from my local craft store to achieve really bold colors.
  • Make mini whoopie pies by rolling your dough into smaller balls; just reduce your baking time by 2-3 minutes.
  • Prefer a not-so-sweet filling? Substitute whipped topping in place of canned cream cheese frosting.
  • For a little extra sparkle, roll the sides of your whoopie pies in red, white and blue sprinkles.
