Moscow mules are all the rage these days, and the holiday season is no exception. Wait … what exactly is a mule and where did the name come from anyway? Well, it’s a cocktail made with vodka, ginger beer and lime juice, invented back in Los Angeles in 1941. Some say “mule” was added to the name because ginger beer gives it such a kick. And it’s traditionally served over ice in a copper mug, creating an extra-cold sensation and keeping the cocktail perfectly chilled.

Honestly, it’s a wonderful drink for entertaining, since it suits so many different tastes. Not too sharp. Not too sour. Not too sweet. (In fact, it’s the only cocktail that my husband and I both like!) But how can you make this traditional drink a little more special for the holidays?

Here’s how to make your holiday mules – three ways!

Idea #1: Apple Cider Moscow Mule

Who doesn’t love the cozy spices and sweetness of apple cider around the holidays? Simply combine 1 tablespoon Mulled Wine Drink Mixer, 2 tablespoons (1 oz.) caramel vodka, 2 tablespoons apple juice, ¼ cup (2 oz.) ginger beer and the juice of ½ lemon in a pretty copper mug. Fill with ice.

So fresh, fun and festive! Garnish with a cinnamon stick, apple slice or a lemon wedge.

Idea #2: Spiced Pear Moscow Mule

Crisp pear. Fresh rosemary. Cozy spices. (Don’t tell the others, but this one is my favorite.)

Tips & Hints

  • You can find copper mugs available at most local retailers, as well as online through Amazon and Target. I’ve found most of my favorites at TJ Maxx!
  • Make sure your ginger beer is well-chilled in advance, so ice lasts longer in your drinks.
  • Can’t find cranberry vodka? Substitute regular vodka and add a generous splash of cranberry juice to taste.
