Fun fact: did you know that tiramisu means “pick me up” in Italian?
Traditionally tiramisu is a light and delicately sweet Italian dessert, made with ladyfingers soaked in espresso, Marsala wine and/or rum – all layered with whipped mascarpone and dusted with cocoa. It’s creamy, dreamy and absolutely divine.
It’s also … a bit of a hassle. Now I have no doubt that Italians have it down to a science. But this girl tried making it once at home and spent over $75 on ingredients (I don’t normally have Marsala in the cupboard), made a mess of my kitchen and had to throw most of it away after a few days since my husband isn’t “much of a sweets guy” and my kiddos were little at the time. Sad times, right? (As much as I love tiramisu, nobody should really eat a 9 x 13 pan of any dessert alone.)
Tiramisu is still one of my favorite desserts though, so I couldn’t have been more excited when NEW Tiramisu Cheese Ball Mix made its debut this month.
YOU GUYS. It’s amazing! Add cream cheese. Boom. That’s it. You get all the luscious sweetness of cream, cocoa and a hint of coffee – without any of the work.
Wondering how else to mix it up? Here’s how we’ve stirred it up in our kitchen so far:
1. Simple Tiramisu Mousse. Using an electric mixer on high, whip 1 packet Tiramisu Cheese Ball Mix with 2 cups heavy whipping cream for a pillowy, luxuriously creamy mousse. So easy and elegant!
Top with a little fresh fruit or chocolate curls if you’re feeling fancy. Otherwise, enjoy it with a spoon in your pjs. (We’re still in quarantine. No judgement here.)
2. Tiramisu Cookie Mini Trifles. Take that dreamy tiramisu mousse a little further by layering it in clear cups with crushed chocolate sandwich cookies and fresh raspberries.
I love making mini desserts like this because they look special and sophisticated, but they are so simple!
3. Creamy Tiramisu Pie. While ladyfingers are traditional in tiramisu, sometimes they can be hard to find or expensive. For a quick shortcut, I created this easy recipe with vanilla wafers instead.
This simple pie is made with a chocolate cookie crust, creamy tiramisu filling and sweet vanilla wafer cookies. Bonus: if you have kiddos, they’ll love nibbling on the leftover cookies, too.
4. Tiramisu Mini Cheesecakes. Aren’t they adorable?
Luscious and little, these bite-sized beauties are topped with a dollop of whipped cream, fresh strawberries and a sprinkle of cinnamon. While my husband and I enjoyed them as midnight snacks last week (again … in pjs), these would be perfect for holiday entertaining, too.
5. Tiramisu Swirl Cheesecake Brownies.Looking for a kid-friendly dessert or afterschool snack this fall? Bake a warm pan of these rich brownies, swirled with tiramisu cheesecake filling.
Since they travel well, you can even make an extra pan for your next-door neighbor or a friend as a sweet surprise.
